WGC Accenture Matchplay Rorys Mistake!

Well an a amazing two weeks in California & Tucson, great weather early then snow!

Was not expecting the white stuff to follow me to the desert, and I think Rory & Tiger are considering paying me to not follow them again!

Record so far been at two of their tournaments and in the first one they both missed the cut, and in the second one they both lost in the first round!

I know matchplay can be a bit flukey but even so that is some record, I could even believe it could be  a bit of a jinx?

Anyway the golf course at Dove Mountain is superb but vicious, greens are so hard, huge slopes and very fast, the course is very long for example a 536 yd par 4!

I got up close to all the players and got some great slow motion videos, including a last practice session with Rory before his first match on Wednesday.

He was hitting great shots on the range , drivers very long, he said he was hitting the new driver better than ever.

He gave an impromptu interview with Golf Channels Kelly Tilghman and she was asking Rory about his clubs, his new house, his girlfriend, and even wanted his phone number!

He is very popular in the U.S. large crowds following the world no1, he was looking composed and in control considering everything that has happened this year, and I believe the new clubs are not an issue at all.

I believe Rory is simply not swinging as well and of course their is huge expectation, which adds more pressure and that will not go till he wins with his new equipment.

I have put his swing on my Youtube channel and give my views and make a comparison with Justin Rose & Hunter Mahan who both swing the club on a consistent swing plane.

Take a look and see what you think and let me know.

Happy Golfing.

The Open 2014

Rory McIlroy

I was willing Rory to win as I watched the final round unfold on TV, it was closer than many people thought, but he won!

Rory’s majestic play the first few days were exceptional, a golfer in peak form fulfilling the potential we knew he had, making the game look so easy.

That final round was so different to the first three days, he made a brilliant start, birdieing the first hole with a monumental drive nearly 300yds into the breeze, superb iron shot and a great putt.

He we go he is going to win by seven or eight shots surely?

But having a six shot lead and the expectation of the crowd, the press, and himself it proved a hard task to play cavalier golf.

The chasing pack had nothing to lose, they could just go for it and attack, and they did so many scores of sixty five, sixty six were coming in.

Sergio Garcia played fantastic golf and proved that he has got back his love for the game and is strong ready to compete at this rarified level of the Majors.

Ricky Fowler played so good all week and his now showing his huge potential we knew he had but was sometimes too inconsistent.

He has been working on some swing changes with Butch Harmon and they are working.

Fowler, Garcia, Mcilroy are birdie machines, they do not hold back, they attack when they can, go for par fives, they are aggressive .

Sometimes that approach has got them into trouble, but when it comes off and the course is set up in a fair way, it is so exciting to watch, and so it proved at Hoylake this year.

So what about Tiger Woods, well I think if you haven’t played for five months and had back surgery and come back and  made the cut in the Open with hardly any tournament play, I believe that is a very good performance.

Tiger has always set new levels of achievement and people were divided between either he will come back as before or he had no chance, we know what happened.

The golf world must give Tiger time to get back into his routine and get his preparation right and we should really only judge him in a few months time.

I cannot see Tiger winning another major again.

He was the best golfer I have ever seen, he had it all, great mental strength, power, finesse, putting genius, amazing will to win, course management, and at his peak he had control of his competitors, they could hardly ever beat him, even when he was hitting all over the course he found a way to win. He intimidated his competitors.

Not any more, the invincibility has gone, the young guns have no fear, they haven’t tasted defeat, they love taking on the challenge of a older, fatigued, injured former god of golf and enhancing their reputation.

Tiger absolutely hates it and I am sure he is going to give it one more big go at getting his game back and showing that he can come back one more time, now he is feeling healthy.

He must sort out the driver though!

So who had the amazing power drives this week, the short game touch, the mental strength, made the birdies and saved the pars, had a game plan and strategy and really believed it was his time?

Yep it was Rory this week , he put it all together, we have had flashes of brilliance this year, but then he had a really bad round, which for a player with that talent is really surprising.

This is what I said five years ago about Rory.

“If Rory can continue to stay healthy, learn how to keep his score going when not quite at his best and eliminate small errors of judgement on course, such as course management and shot selection, there will be no stopping this young man becoming a regular tour winner where ever he plays in the world and become the best european player since Seve and Nick”

He is well on his way with three majors at twenty five, Faldo won his first Open when he was thirty and had four majors at thirty three, three of them the Masters, a total of six majors in his career, so Rory has about another eight years at least, which is another thirty two attempts to win at least three more to surpass Nick!

I believe he will win more majors, but cannot see anybody getting near Tiger Woods at fourteen majors and Jack Nicklaus at eighteen majors.

Happy Golfing!

Tigers Missing Link is it Lindsey?

Has Tigers improved form, two wins this season so far on the PGA tour had anything to do with his private life being more settled?

Tiger just announced yesterday he has a new woman in his life, Lindsey Vonn, a blonde twenty eight year old, pin up girl of the skiing world, she is a downhill skier, she skied for the USA in the Olympics and competes in the World championships and World Cup downhills and has a great record.

She recently had a very bad skiing accident damaging her knee & Tiger sent his private jet to pick her up after the accident, this was the first news of them together.

Tiger has certainly played much better, his short game and putting have been back to his old standard, he still has lapses with the driver, but he is putting together rounds more consistently, and as a build up to the Masters, he must be happy with his current form.

Also he must be really happy with the form of Lindsey Vonn!

It is probably a good idea to make it all public now and end speculation before the first major comes round.

It will be another interesting story to follow as the season unfolds.

Tiger has the world no 1 in his sights due to Rory Mcilroys poor start to the season and he could be back at the no 1 ranking in the next week or two, especially if he wins his eighth title at Bay Hill this week, an incredible performance.

We will see how much his personal life has influenced his golf and if it helps him get back on course to win more majors, so far 14, and get closer to Jack Nicklaus record of 18 majors.

Happy Golfing,

US Open Merion Hogan and the rest.

Hogan swing sequence driverWell a US Open is nearly here, and its at the famous Merion golf club in Pennsylvania this year.

An iconic image in golf is the golfing legend Ben Hogan hitting a 1 iron into the 18th green at Merion in 1950 to make a par and get into a  three man 18 hole play off with Lloyd Mangrum & Tom Fazio.

In those days you played thirty six holes on the last day & Ben Hogan had only eighteen months earlier survived a terrible car crash that nearly killed him, so he played thirty six holes, then had to play another eighteen on legs that were weakened and fatigued, yet he went on to win that US.Open!

He then won the 1951 and 1953 US.Opens as well as the 1948 US Open.

Hence the Ben Hogan legend and Hollywood made a movie about his life called Follow the Sun.

Tiger Woods is the same age as Ben Hogan when Hogan won in 1950, Hogan won six more of his nine majors after this win, will Tiger get the win which will catapult him to more majors?

If Tiger does win win it will be his fourth US Open, tying him with Hogan, Nicklaus, Jones, and Willie Anderson.

The first two rounds pair up Tiger Woods, Rory Mcilroy and Adam Scott, world number one , two and three, and it should be a great battle to see who comes out on top, as these three players are probably the best to watch.

You can look at these great players and many more on my Youtube channel David Bown PGA

The European Tour is in Abu Dhabi this week with the world no1 Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods leading the list of top golfers taking part. I will be there!

This week throws up many interesting talking points, how will Rory play with his new Nike clubs & will the weight of his huge contract in the bag weigh him down. Will he continue where he left of last year, or will it take time to get comfortable with the new equipment. Can he win it this year?

How will Tiger start his 2013 season, will he raise his game to the level he was before or is that era of Tigers career over for good, this should give us an indication of where he is with his golf game.

I believe Tiger will never perform at that level again, can anyone perform at that level and dominate golf like he did? No!

For me too much has happened, too much baggage, before he had the aura of invincibility, when he was in the lead he won, now players see he is very beatable, his aura has gone , his performance level of before has dropped a few notches, the young power players are coming and they are winning when he plays.

Let me add the Tiger we see now is a superb player, and you cannot expect him to play at the level he was throughout his whole career, winning wise he is in a big dip, last year he came back to winning tournaments, but no majors again, so with any top athlete the longer they go without winning the big ones, it will only get harder. If he does not  win a Major this season, I believe his major tally will stay at fourteen.

Tigers goal is to win & especially win the Majors, so this is a great warm up for him to test his game before playing his first event on the US Tour at Torrey Pines.

Justin Rose & Jason Dufner are also playing this week, so is Ernie Els, its a very strong field and while everyone is talking about Rory & Tiger think back to last years champion Robert Rock,, who saw that win coming!

Then we have Paul McGinley the new Ryder Cup captain for 2014 being announced in Abu Dhabi, a very good appointment, the players wanted him and he will go up against US  captain Tom Watson,

I wish him and the team every success in 2014 at Gleneagles.

I will keep you informed of events while I am at  the HSBC tour event in Abu Dhabi

If you cannot be there watch on Sky Sports golf!

Following Rory and Tiger to Tucson!

Back on the trail of world no 1 Rory McIlroy and world no 2 Tiger Woods, I am in Tucson Arizona for the WGC Accenture Matchplay at Dove Mountain.

It will be good to see how Rory is adapting to his new Nike equipment at first hand .

He hasn’t played tournament golf for four weeks so has been practicing hard getting familiar with, ball, driver, irons, well everything really!

I will be getting on the course and range watching and taking videos of the top 64 players in the world, and will be posting the swings on my golf channel David Bown PGA on Youtube soon.

The format is, no 1 plays no 64, no 2 plays no 63 etc over 18 holes and should bring up some interesting match ups, and I would expect many surprises over 18 holes matchplay.

Will keep you posted from Tucson!

Happy golfing,

Why Tiger is more consistent than Rory?

Rory and Tiger in Desert storm !

My time at the HSBC tournament in Abu Dhabi was superb, the course was tough, and in great condition, the greens were perfect and very fast, the weather was warm, sunny, and with a light breeze.

The organisation by HSBC was brilliant, there was something for everyone in the village and the staff were very helpful and friendly.

Everything was set for the two main contenders to show their talents, Rory and Tiger, but alas it was not to be .

Rory had the worst kept secret in golf , the Nike deal announced, he had new everything, driver, irons, wedges, putter, ball, shoes and clothing, he missed the cut!

This is why sport is so fascinating, nothing can be taken for granted, no matter who you are, every week its a new challenge, different players coming into form, others losing form.

Rory said the clubs were great, he was just rusty, I believe him, he was a bit rusty and he is a streaky player, when he is on his game he is amazing, when he is slightly off he finds it hard to keep a score going, although last season he really improved in that area of the game.

Rory did not hole anything on the greens, even when he went back to his trusty Scotty the ball would not drop.

He will be back very soon, its a long season, and he needs a bit more time to get his game on song.

This brings me to Tiger, he missed the cut too, had a two stroke penalty to miss the cut by one, he hung in there , but missed a lot of fairways.

It just shows that in the next tournament he plays in, his first on the US PGA tour, he wins by four !!

Ah sport you just never know, and that is what makes it so exciting.

This is why Tigers record over his career is truly amazing, all the variables of sport, yet Tiger just kept on beating everyone every season, we took it for granted, he didnt, he knew how much work it took , the dedication it took, and there are so many players on tour with that desire and dedication, who give it everything each week.

The difference is the special ingredient called, having unbelievable talent !!

2013 should be another great golfing season.

Happy golfing.
