Tigers Missing Link is it Lindsey?

Has Tigers improved form, two wins this season so far on the PGA tour had anything to do with his private life being more settled?

Tiger just announced yesterday he has a new woman in his life, Lindsey Vonn, a blonde twenty eight year old, pin up girl of the skiing world, she is a downhill skier, she skied for the USA in the Olympics and competes in the World championships and World Cup downhills and has a great record.

She recently had a very bad skiing accident damaging her knee & Tiger sent his private jet to pick her up after the accident, this was the first news of them together.

Tiger has certainly played much better, his short game and putting have been back to his old standard, he still has lapses with the driver, but he is putting together rounds more consistently, and as a build up to the Masters, he must be happy with his current form.

Also he must be really happy with the form of Lindsey Vonn!

iPhoto Library

It is probably a good idea to make it all public now and end speculation before the first major comes round.

It will be another interesting story to follow as the season unfolds.

Tiger has the world no 1 in his sights due to Rory Mcilroys poor start to the season and he could be back at the no 1 ranking in the next week or two, especially if he wins his eighth title at Bay Hill this week, an incredible performance.

We will see how much his personal life has influenced his golf and if it helps him get back on course to win more majors, so far 14, and get closer to Jack Nicklaus record of 18 majors.

Happy Golfing,

David

SEVE at his best.

It is US Masters week very soon and it is my favourite tournament of the year, the golf course is stunning, the weather is great ,its the first major of the year, and it usually has an exciting finish.

What more could you want?

Well when I think back over all the Masters tournaments I have seen, for a european, seeing Seve striding the fairways, playing sublime golf in a matador style, hitting iron shots, drives echoing through the trees, putts holed, recovery shots, it was fantastic to see, here was a golfer that was not afraid to win, believed he could win, and he was just so good that he could win anywhere!

Seve led the way for the europeans making a huge impact at Augusta and beyond.

Here is my recollection of a great day at Wentworth in the early eighties.

Back in the 1980s Seve Ballesteros was the most exciting player on the planet, and your best chance of seeing him in the UK was at the OPEN or at the World Matchplay tournament in October held at Wentworth.

i had been going to the World matchplay for over thirty years and seen Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson, Tom Weiskopf, Gary Player, Tony Jacklin, Tiger Woods,Ernie Els, the list goes on and on.

But Seve was different to them all, not just in the way he played the course, there was a magic a charisma about him, you just had to watch him play golf to understand., you never new what was going to happen next, and even the impossible seemed possible back then.

I was there on a practice day so you could get much closer to the players, and on this occasion I had brought my video camera, and low and behold here was the master just arriving on the the east course eighteenth hole to start his warm up and practice.

There were only a handful of people there at the start and I thought here is a great opportunity, so I just asked Seve if he would mind if I filmed him practicing!

He said it was OK in his spanish accent and I was their like a bullet, right down the line, I was there with a friend and there are some classic comments on the video , such as,” it makes a different sound to the others”, “look at how square his divots are”, “pure”,” it makes me want to clap” “all I need to do is watch this video all night and tomorrow I will play great ”

This is what effect Seve had on us , I was frightened to take my camera of him for a second, because I knew this was very special, you might see the camera move left slightly as I was getting distracted , but a nano second of thought told me STOP you are kidding THIS IS THE PLACE TO BE!

I was so right.

I hope you take a look at the gracefull, flowing swing, his great rhythm, balance, power, a real genius of golf, he was an inspiration to many professional golfers who are playing right now and SEVE will rightly go down down as one of the greatest players in history.

The Five Steps to Golfing Success!

Where are you on your path to golfing success?

Are you all packed ready to take on the challenge, have you got the nessesary tools/skills?

Do you know where you want to go?

Do you know where you are right now?

Let me look at the first point, where are you now, well you probably really like golf, you would like to be better at it, you don`t have as much time as you would like to play or practice, you play once every two weeks, you might go to the range once a or twice a month.

You expect to play well and hit good shots, you get frustrated when you do not, this is a pretty good analysis of your game right now.

So how do you change, well first it is so important to really know where you are before you start on your journey of improvement, not where YOU believe or hope you are.

Please do not be embarrased or have an ego, be honest with yourself, I know its hard.

Are you making the right choices? If you are not getting better then NO you are not!

Step 1. Please see an expert, not a golfing buddy/ friend to help you, go to a PGA professional who has been trained and has researched the game over many years, to help your golf.

Step 2. See your swing on video, it will help you see things better, you pro will be able to explain to you exactly where you are now and show you how you can achieve where you want to be, playing better golf.

Step 3. Once you have your static alignments sound ie. Grip, Posture, ball position, alignment, which is not difficult, this will allow you to move with good motion. So its like anything Set -up for success not failure.

Step 4 You will need to understand how to move your body correctly during your swing, so its the Pivot that is a key component of the good golfer. Learn how to move. The club will follow.

Step 5 Yes you guessed it Practice, rehearse what you have been shown, to improve at anything you need to actually do it, sounds easy but it is not.

Finally, its a great time right now, to start learning or improving your golf, yes its cold, but if you start now, by the time spring arrives you will able to take advantage of the weather and pit your new skills against the course, and really enjoy your golf!

You can work on grip , posture, alignment , ball position, indoors, you can also use a mirror to help with the pivot.

All these things will help, good luck.

Hope to see you soon!

Tiger leaves Haney, sorry I mean Haney leaves Tiger?

Well all the talk of the past few months in the teaching community has just come true, Hank Haney is no longer Tigers swing coach.

I had heard that Tiger was going to leave Haney, but although the news has a different twist, a reversal of what we thought would happen, the end result is the same.

With all the upheaval in the last several months regarding Tiger, and even though he has not played or practiced that much at all, we all realised that the way Tiger was swinging the club it was not going well.

His last round at the Masters was amazing, he was all over the course, but his recovery powers were truly incredible,  he turned a probable 77 into a 69, his desire kept him up there.

But you cannot keep fighting your swing every round, you might get away with it a few times, but at the level of the PGA tour you will come up short.

He has gone from winning the US OPEN by 15 shots in 2000 and holding all four majors in one year, to fighting his swing and digging deep to finish in the top four.

Let me say that Tiger won several majors with Hank Haney, as he did with Butch Harmon, but sometimes a particular pattern of swing suits you more, and Tiger is so talented he can make almost anything work and be successful!

I believe he has his next swing coach in the wings, his name is Sean Foley, he is Canadian, works with Sean O`Hair, Hunter Mahan, and just recently our own Justin Rose has joined up. Tiger could work with anyone and be really good, we all know that, he must know by now what swing works best for him, he needs to clear his mind and refocus on getting HIS best swing back, not trying to model a way of swinging onto him.

What I see is Tiger fighting the swing, losing more distance, playing a lot of fades, in order to keep his ball in play, that is not the Tiger we saw earlier in his career, he was free flowing, attacking, I believe he is the greatest golfer in the history of the game, even though he is behind Nicklaus in the majors, he has played the most amazing golf shots throughout his career, shots that other players can only dream of, plus he has an incredible will to win, amazing fitness levels, an intimidation factor that was there for all to see, and if you were in the last group with Tiger you were going to lose! That is not the case right now.

I look on with great interest, to see what is going to happen next, I really hope we see Tiger back to his supreme best, there is a lot of work to do, with his divorce, his fitness, his swing, there are a lot of things against him, most of which he brought on himself,   but if anyone can do it he can, and if he does it will be a lot of fun to watch. Tiger we want you back to your best, we want the REAL TIGER back.

TIGER back as World no1!

Well Tiger Woods has made the comeback from world no 54 to world no1,

he has his third win on the PGA tour this season and it was a back to back wins

& his eighth win at Bay Hill, Arnold Palmers tournament, the records just keep on growing!

Tiger has been world no1 for 77% of the time since he turned professional in 1996!

With Rory Mcilroy not as yet finding his form this season, he has lost the top spot, but maybe that will take a bit of pressure of him and start to get back to his best.

The US Masters is here in a couple of weeks and they will resume there rivalry, I can feel the golfing world anticipating the battle ahead, because everyone wants to see these players at their best at the top of the leader board come Sunday.

I will be watching as always and for me its the best Major of the year, because of the course and the drama it provides

every year.

I have put this video together to give you a taste of the expectation, enjoy!

Happy Golfing.

Seve anniversary

Hard to believe it was one year ago on Monday 7th May 2011 that Severiano Ballesteros passed away.

My tribute to Seve is to show again my video that I took of Seve at Wentworth practicing, it was a great experience to watch the master at work.

Here is my post on Seve and my video.

It is US Masters week very soon and it is my favourite tournament of the year, the golf course is stunning, the weather is great ,its the first major of the year, and it usually has an exciting finish.

Tiger chasing down all-time Greats!

Tiger Woods won his third PGA TOUR event this season on Sunday at the AT&T at Congressional Golf Course, more wins this year than any other player, and his third win in the last seven starts!!!

Is he back?

Untill he wins a Major I guess most of his critics will say not yet, but the more he keeps winning tour events he must start picking up major wins like he did in the past very soon, he has two more opportunities this season, the Open & the USPGA to do so.

It is interesting to compare the all time winners on the US PGA TOUR as seen here.

Sam Snead compiled his 82 wins over a 29 year career

Tiger Woods 74 career  wins so far have taken 16 years.

Jack Nicklaus 73 career wins took 24 years

Ben Hogan 64 career wins took 21 years but of course the war years and his car crash restricted his playing career.

Arnold Palmer 62 career wins took 18 years.

So just comparing Tiger to Jack, Tiger has taken 8 years less than Jack to amass 74 victories, very impressive, Tiger is 36 yrs old and Jack was 46 when he won his last major the 1986 US Masters.

How long will Tiger keep  playing, that is hard to predict of course, but I guess he will keep going as long as he can untill he breaks the Nicklaus major record of 18.

If Tiger plays till age 46 as Jack, he has ten more years and forty more major tournaments to achieve that dream of winning 5 more. Also Tiger has won 14 majors since 1996 but has not won a major since US Open 2008 when he was suffering with damage to his knee and won a play off against Rocco Mediate, he has been in twelve play offs and lost one in 1998 so far during his career.

I personally believe he will not play as long as Jack Nicklaus did, I do believe he will surpass Sam Snead on the all time PGA Tour wins, if he wins three more a season it will take him three more years to do so and he is not finished  yet with the 2012 season. After Tiger had his first win of the season at Bay Hill in March I said he would win 5 times this year and I stand by that, it could even be more!

So its interesting to look back to Pebble Beach in February when Mickleson beat Tiger badly in a head to head and many commentators criticised Tiger saying he would not win again. Since then Mickleson has not won a tournament. Who would believe that !

So how many Majors will Tiger win before he puts his clubs away?

Simon Khan, wins BMW PGA, what can you learn?

What a story Simon Khan wins BMW PGA tour event at Wentworth, goes from 473 in the world to 105, wins the biggest cheque of his career £640,000, all on a sponsors invite! Ryder cup team beckons, wow what a turnaround to a career.

Simon then without much sleep goes to Walton Heath to try and qualify for the U.S.Open, arrives very early in the morning, tees off and scores of 67 and 70- total 7 under par for 36 holes gets him into a six man play off for five spots, he pars the first hole and is out ! How cruel this game can be, but the positives far outweigh the negatives.
He is playing the best golf of his career so far, and as I watched him at Walton Heath he looked so composed, relaxed, and hit really pure straight shots.

This is the 5 iron into the par five.
What can you learn?

1. Simon has a very relaxed style of play, again is very fluid, fine balance, rhythm. Sets up to the ball with good balance and alignment, very relaxed posture, no stiffness in his set up.

2. Starts club back with chest and arms, very smooth flow into the backswing, no rushing at all, wrists hinge gradually and automatically, and it is all smooth and controlled.

3. As with all tour players Simon uses his lower body to start the club down, a great transition, and as you saw in Rory McIlroy a slight squat as he starts down, showing you that his lower body is working first, which then creates the correct sequence of motion for the rest of his body, feet, knees, hips, trunk, arms, wrists, club, its like going through the gears in your car, accelerating in each gear and then flowing smoothly into the next one to maximise power.

4.He keeps rotating through the ball, into a full free finish, great poise and balance. He keeps the club on plane really well throughout his swing.

There seems to be a theme to these swings of Rory and Simon, fluidity, relaxation, rhythm, balance, uses the body really well, great pivot action back and through, and great body sequencing throughout, developing hidden power, which is transferred through the arms into the golf club.
One player a boy prodigy with fantastic natural talent, another a mature tour pro who has experienced the ups and downs, who has been to the qualifying school ten times, and is now playing the best golf of his life.

Arnold Palmer the King!

This week the US PGA tour calls in at the Bay Hill club & Lodge, located near Orlando Florida.

It is a super golf course, I played it several years ago and has a lot of water in front of the greens.

The eighteenth hole has a plaque down the fairway on the left and it says, Robert Gamez holed a Seven iron from 175 yds for a 2 to win the golf tournament from Greg Norman!

Its a scary second shot with water down the right hand side, and usually the pin is tucked in the back right location, so you have to go all over water if you want a birdie to win, Norman thought he was    going to win or at worst make a play off, but he loses to a 2 on a long par four!

This tournament is special because of Arnold Palmer, and all that the King has done for the game , and all he has brought to the game, all the players love this week.

As I said at the beginning of this post I have played Bay Hill and I was very lucky to actually meet Mr Palmer at his restaurant  in La Quinta California two years ago.

Golfing legend Arnold Palmer & David Bown

Golfing legend Arnold Palmer & David Bown

If you are lucky enough to go to that part of the world you must eat there, the food is so good, the atmosphere is great and you might meet the King!

The place has many of Mr Palmers clubs, bags and pictures, and also in the gents toilets there is a scorecard of his showing he scored a 28 on the back nine! Not sure if there is a copy in the ladies!

He was so warm and welcoming, huge hands and you knew you were in the company of a legend, yet you felt at ease being there, that is a special talent!

Imagine how many autographs, hand shakes, pictures he has done, incredible!

Enjoy watching the tournament, it starts Thursday, and as I am not over there following Tiger, he should make the cut!!!

Happy Golfing
